My students need notebooks, markers, and readiness games for learning fun! With scented reinforcement stickers, colorful writing pads and interactive alphabet games my students will be thrilled to come to class for learning fun.
Most of my students are currently nonambulatory as a result of illness or injury. They are attending school in an acute rehabilitation hospital. The students are often distracted from learning because of pain, medication, sadness and anger. The children in my class are from New York and the surrounding areas. We also accept and treat children from other states and from out of this county.
My students 4 to 21 years of age are currently hospitalized for an extended period for intensive rehabilitation.
They receive medical, speech, psychological, occupational, physical and educational intervention daily while in the hospital. It is the goal to reunite students with their friends, families and home district school classmates. My kids have suffered brain injury, physical delays, cognitive and social delays as a result of accidents and illness. Students have a wide range of challenges which are a result of amputations, stroke, cancer, surgeries and other complicated life circumstances. I work for NYC DOE Hospital Schools which supports teachers in 38 NYC Hospitals. My students are warriors they fight the fight every day pushing past the pain.
My Project
Many of my students have Aphasia a communication disorder that results from damage to the parts of the brain that contain language. Some have additional difficulties beyond speech and language issues. Aphasia may causes difficulties in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. My students, may also have disease or damage to the parts of the brain that control language. Brain tumors, traumatic brain injury, and progressive neurological disorders are very challenging for young children and their families. Making school fun and engaging allows learning while getting a brief respite from their pain and worries of hospitalization.
