Seven Ancient Wonders: Hanging Gardens

My project needs are 2 upside down hanging tomato planters, 1 hydroponic EZ garden set, and assorted seeds and soils.

Creating our own hanging gardens...The possibilities are endless... I will be teaching the 4th grade science curriculum to my inner city students for the first time this fall. One of the basic concepts in the area of Earth sciences is the growth process and life cycle of a plant. My plan is to integrate science, history, and social studies by connecting the study of the plant with one of the Seven Wonders of The Ancient World, specifically, The Hanging Gardens of Babylon. I believe that I can increase my students interest in the scientific concepts involved in a plant's life and growth processes by introducing the idea of a plant as a manipulative learning tool. I will tie the concepts together by including the study of the Hanging Gardens, and the idea that nature (plants) have been cultivated and manipulated by man for thousands of years. This hands-on study will include experimentation with gravity, (upside down planting), and examining growth in artificial sunlight. Help me bring these resources together.
