This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are hard-working, passionate, and resilient young people who live in East Oakland. Despite facing a deluge of obstacles to their education including poverty, homelessness, learning English, and violence, my students come to school each day excited to be a part of our school community. In our class, students are engaged in activities that help them to envision and build a better future for themselves and their community. Even though there are many systems in place working to lock my students into a cycle of failure, they continually bounce back by working hard to overcome the challenges they face.
My students get most excited about doing experiments and solving real world problems with their science knowledge.
Their favorite activities from last year included making a solar-powered water purification device, designing a cold pack that could be used during wildfire evacuations, and creating the perfect DIY slime recipe.
My Project
This year, my scientists are balancing in-person learning, quarantining at home after an exposure, and just trying to be a kid. Even though there's a lot working against them, they come to school each day excited and ready to learn.
These supplies will help me ensure that all students are learning - whether they are at home or in the classroom.
In order to support all students (including those who need to stay home), I've been using blended learning in our classroom. Two days out of each week, students are engaging in hands-on science experiments and discussions with their group. Two other days each week, students are using Chromebooks and working at their own pace on digital assignments. This allows me to creating learning experiences for students who are in my classroom and at home. Additionally, students can work at their own pace, which allows advanced students to move more quickly through their work and creates space for students who need practice to slow down.
I am requesting these supplies to help support our students. I recently requested bouncy bands and they were a huge hit! Students love being able to move their feet while sitting at their desk. Additionally, I need more headphones to complete my class set. This will support students as they listen to videos on Chromebooks. Lastly, a few students love to use mice - it's hard for them to use the small keypad on the Chromebooks. With these supplies, my scientists will feel comfortable and supported as they complete their blended learning assignments.
