Setting Up for Success in Writer's and Reader's Workshop

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) Magnet school with a diverse population that reflects Los Angeles County. Half of my students ride the bus in from various parts of Los Angeles County. Most of our school receive free or reduced price lunch.

My students are motivated and diligent students.

I not only have an ethnically diverse class, but I also have a class with varying academic abilities. I have students who have been identified with special needs as well as students who demonstrate strong academic capabilities. My students come with a keen interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Our school's goal is to prepare every child to be college and career ready, especially in the areas of STEAM.

My Project

The beginning of a new school year is an exciting time but also a crucial time to get all my students off on the right foot. We need post-it labels, thermal laminator, magnets, and markers to make and post up strategy charts that my students can refer to during Reader's and Writer's Workshop since most of my students are visual learners. The markers and color pencils will help us with publishing student-generated books during Writer's Workshop. The composition books will be essential for my students to record their learning while they read and to practice grammar, spelling, and writing skills. The magnetic letters will help my students during word study and spelling activities in small groups. The individual white boards and dry erase markers will allow students to practice their spelling and writing as well as provide a way to interact with the teacher and each other during lessons. The Guided Reading books will provide my students with just right books so they may read at their independent level during Reader's Workshop. My students need the privacy partitions to have their personal, quiet space to take assessments or to limit distractions during Workshop time.

These materials will help enhance my students' learning as they become proficient readers and writers.

My students will be so excited to be equipped with our much needed materials for successful implementation of Reader's and Writer's Workshops.
