This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Work hard, get smart!"
This drives my kindergarten students to prepare for first grade every year. Part of that preparation involves whole group time on the classroom carpet. My current classroom carpet is old, run down, busy, distracting, and does not provide personal space my students need.
My students LOVE learning.
They are smart, funny, creative and inspirational. They love listening to stories, using whiteboards to show their work and show off their learning, singing alphabet songs, engaging in rich discussions - just to name a few.
All of these learning opportunities happen during our whole group time. They love our whole group time when we can come together as a team to learn, but our current classroom carpet makes that time difficult. Because it is old, labels with names for assigned spots do not stick. It does not provide the students with clearly visible assigned spots to provide personal space. It is too busy, which is distracting and takes away from our learning. My students need a classroom carpet with squares that make it easy for them to find a spot.
Our school has 100% of students on free and reduced lunch. Most of my students families' work hard to support their children but are unable to commit the time or money to contribute to our need
My Project
If our classroom carpet was updated, it would transform our classroom and provide an ideal learning environment.
The classroom carpet I have chosen for this project has clearly marked colorful squares and is not busy or distracting. My kindergarten students need consistency and clarity, and the new classroom carpet would provide both.
We would not waste instructional time on revisiting procedures over and over due to a "too busy" carpet. Each student would have enough personal space to feel safe and comfortable yet still part of our team. With the personal space problem resolved, a more peaceful environment would allow for less student to student conflict. Each student would have their own clearly marked visible square and would not need their spot labeled with tape. My students love turning and talking with a partner, and this classroom carpet would easily allow for those discussions. Whole group time is part of our daily routine, so a functional carpet is vital.
My kindergarteners work hard to get ready for first grade.
With little parental involvement and lack of support at home, school is the only place they have a chance to be successful for many of them. Whole group time is vital for my little learners to develop a sense of community, team, and love of learning. What is just a rug to some is actually a pathway to success for our littlest learners and your donation would be greatly appreciated.
