My Students
Travel back in time, if you will, to junior year. You are writing college essays and deciding what career paths you are seriously considering. The first essay tells you to share some challenges you've overcome and/or share your greatest accomplishment. Here is what my students can say: 80% of their class will graduate (20% higher than the national average); many of them will be the first to go to college, pursuing engineering or medicine; many more struggled to keep up a GPA while working 20 hours a week, and all have worked diligently in classrooms that are undersized and underfunded.
My students are in the backyard of UC Berkeley, a STEM hallmark; yet, they have little hope of going when they attend school in the most underfunded district in the bay.
Just 20 minutes away, my students live in Oakland--an over-stereotyped and underestimated part of the Silicon Valley. This means that we, teachers, have to be "creative" in conducting labs on a $350 per year budget and little technology that will give students a positive experience and prepare students for their medicine, engineering or other desired STEM careers.
My Project
My students are juniors, which means this is the year of the SAT! and we need a leg up on the competition. With the opportunity gap, students from high income areas have paid tutors, after school programs, and other resources to aid them. Thankfully, we have Khan Academy and other free resources available to our class-but there's a catch.
Khan academy teaches individually to students through videos and practice sets, but students need headphones in order to listen without distraction.
A high score on the SAT is one of the keys to financial aid and opportunity to more schools. With your help, my students will have an increased opportunity to
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
