My Students
I teach Culinary Arts in an inner-city Title I high school. The students come from varying backgrounds, many riddled with drugs, generational poverty, and domestic violence.
Many of my students have very limited real world experiences, especially when it comes to food.
My goal for them is to learn their way around a kitchen and to be able to provide for their families. Our school system sees the value of Career Technical Education (CTE) and is building more programs to prepare these students to be successful beyond high school. Through CTE classes, these students are able to obtain valuable skills that will benefit them as they enter the workforce.
My Project
Due to damage caused by Hurricane Michael my culinary classes will not be able to meet in our classroom or lab, and possibly not even on our own campus, for at least the remainder of this school year.
While we are learning in portable classrooms, my students will need access to laptops in order to access online study materials for their ServeSafe certification they take in the spring.
All second year culinary students are required to take the certification exam in the spring. By becoming ServeSafe certified the students are immediately employable in the food service industry and therefore become self-sufficient.
