My students need 40 English and Spanish language books that will ignite their literacy in both languages.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Nelson's classroom raised $463
This project is fully funded
My 11th grade Spanish students are devoted to learning Spanish and serving their community. Even though many of my students face constant hardships that are typical of teens growing up in an urban community, my students actively seek out ways to inspire one another. My students want to build their literacy skills and help their peers in doing the same by volunteering with younger members in the community. Service learning experiences give students skills that are applauded my colleges and employers. By working on literacy and service learning my students will become better prepared for life beyond high school.
My school is connected to a preschool and an elementary school in a poverty stricken city in Maryland. After participating in an annual Thanksgiving dinner that serves homeless members of our city, students have been brainstorming other ways to serve. They decided on bringing their Spanish skills to the children in our complex. We are hoping to build a library of Spanish books for children and higher level English language books that will be resources for our service learning experiences with the younger children and peer tutoring. By combining service learning and literacy, students will develop social and language skills that will benefit them now and in the future. Students will be able to earn service hours for the time spent reading Spanish books to children and assisting peers with reading novels about Spanish speaking characters in English. These hours are required by state graduation requirements and will help students be admitting into college. Service learning and literacy are a powerful combination that my students are ready to embrace!
We have selected a variety of Spanish language children's novels that are translated classics. Students will work on practice reading these books in my Spanish classroom and will then take them into the classrooms of younger children in our building. My students will develop leadership and presentation skills that are necessary in college by interacting and reading to younger members of their community. I have helped to select a variety of books that satisfy the diverse learning levels of my students and ensure that the special needs of all of my students are met. My students also want to work on peer tutoring one another by reading English novels about various communities of the Spanish speaking world. With your support, you will be empowering my students to serve their community while engaging with the Spanish language and cultures of the Spanish speaking world. The impact that this project will have on my students, and also on the students that we will serve, will justify any monetary donation you can provide. Service learning is contagious and has the potential to ignite incredible change.
By contributing to this project, you are supplying our classroom with 40 English and Spanish language books that we plan to use to initiate a service learning partnership with younger students in our building and with our peers. By bringing Spanish to young students in the community, many of my students will develop essential leadership and Spanish literacy skills while exposing young community members to a new language and culture. As students peer tutor one another in English, students will build relationships that will promote team work and respect. I am looking forward to beginning this project as soon as possible and hope that you understand the profound impact that you will have on my students and our school community. Literacy and service learning are a powerful combination for inspiring students.
