I teach entrepreneurship to 15 students in an inner city in Maryland. My group is comprised of 7th and 8th graders. The focus of this class is teach to students to not only figure out ways to help themselves by creating and running their own businesses, but to also in the process help others around them.
To help promote the concept of social responsibility, my students will be embarking on a service learning project in Central America.
Student participants will select and identify a social justice issue to research and advocate for change. Students will become global citizens and agents of change both locally and internationally through their participation in our class.
For the upcoming 2008 - 2009 school year students will travel to Central America. While there students will work side by with locals in the small community of Quebrada Arroyo nestled in the rainforest above the Manuel Antonio National Park. This trip will cost us approximately $52,000.
To pay for this exciting learning opportunity, my students will develop and run several small businesses. Currently, we operate The Teacher Lunch Counter at our school, this business venture provides lunches to interested teachers once a week. A few weeks from now we will open our school store.
Our final venture is where we need the most assistance. Last year we sold MSA (our state's standardized test) care packages (each package contains; a pencil, applesauce, a spoon, granola bar, pack of tissue, a mini snickers, and personalized note from the parents) at our school. These packages are intended to motivate and energize students during testing time. We were able generate a substantial amount of money, and so we have, this year, decided to market these packages to other schools in our district. We believe this business venture will provide us with the funds we need to make our service learning project a reality.
Your donation will not only help my 15 students here in Maryland, but will also give them the opportunity to help the children in Central America by helping to build schools for them.
