My students are a great group of students who are filled with a lot of energy. They are a mixture of Brooklyn natives and recent immigrants to our country. I have a large population of recent Yemeni immigrants. They come to school every single day excited to learn. Their excitement pushes me to do my best every day.
Many of my recent Yemeni immigrants have experienced years of interrupted schooling, destruction of their homes and family members that have been lost due to the conflict in their home country.
Despite all of their trauma, these kids are resilient and inspiring, and, lucky for me, love physical activity!
My Project
As a physical education teacher at KBIA, I do my best to introduce my students to as many team sports as possible. Being a school without a gymnasium or field, and very limited space and equipment, it is extremely challenging to provide them with ample opportunities to learn new sports and it makes it very essential to be as creative as possible.
Team sports are a fundamental part of the maturity process of an adolescent; Working as a team while participating in competitive sports builds character, sportsmanship, cooperation and many other social skills.
It is my goal to turn our 1/2 basketball court into a tennis court and build an intramural tennis team in the 2018-2019 school year. This will be possible with 4 tennis rackets, tennis balls, and a net. My students love sport and competition, so help me help them continue to make their high school dreams come true by starting a tennis team!
