My project needs kaleidoscope kits for each child, a set of liquid discovery tubes, and a set of color discovery tubes.

I teach 23 low-income second grade students in a rural elementary school. Almost half of my class speaks Spanish at home. Vocabulary development and understanding the world around them are key factors in the success of my students.
My ideal teaching day involves using my students’ natural curiosity about the world around them to teach science, reading, writing, math, and social studies. I think that would be the best of all worlds. The children would be actively engaged in their learning all day, and I could make the tasks of reading, writing, and math natural consequences of their curiosity. In order accomplish this – even to a small degree, there are several science items that I would like to have to stimulate the curiosity of my students.
I would like to have the following items in my classroom: kaleidoscopes, a set of color discovery tubes, and a set of liquid discovery tubes.
With these materials, curiosity about colors, the density of liquids, and the refraction and reflection of light will be piqued. Having these materials, plus books that I can check out from the media center, will stimulate a great deal of questions about the world around us. It will be these questions that will guide my planning and teaching. These manipulative science materials will help me teach reading, stimulate writing, build vocabulary, delve into history, and use math in an authentic way on a daily basis.
In funding this proposal, you are giving me the chance to fulfill one of my dreams while making a great impact on the students in my classroom. Authentic teaching of this kind makes concepts come together for the kids instead of things being learned in isolation. I want to use these materials to stimulate that kind of learning in my classroom.
