My students need 22 accessible science texts to help them understand the breadth of our science curriculum. Titles include "Weather and Climate," "A Matter of Survival: Properties of Matter," and "A Journey into Adaptation With Max Axiom, Super Scientist."
Our science curriculum is taught in the 2 shortest quarters of the year, meaning that my students did not have the access to the information they needed to do their best on our Science TCAP. They are passionate about science, but lack the relevant knowledge to participate in some of our projects.
I wish that I could teach science everyday to my kids because their faces light up when we begin our classes.
They thrive on participating in our experiments and that feeling of first discovery for themselves. Many of them are interested in science, but have yet to fully realize how they can turn this passion into a career for the future.
My Project
I chose a variety of texts that discuss the widely varied topics on our science curriculum: magnetism, life cycles, habitats, light, energy, and so much more! In addition to traditional non-fiction, I selected a science graphic novel series. A vast majority of my students are reading below grade level and find the graphic novels a more appealing way to read. I also have several ELL students who rely on the images to help them better comprehend the text.
A love for the sciences can translate into many successful careers -- I would love to have my students develop a lifelong passion for science that can guide them towards a career that they love (it doesn't hurt that there's a high need for quality professionals in the science fields!)
