My Students

I am a 5th year teacher of an amazing group of learners. They inspire me each day with their desire, passion, and curiosity to learn about the world around them. Their love for literacy is unimaginable. Each new book that I introduce to them becomes their favorite and reading out loud to them is the best part of my day. My first grade friends are active learners driven by engagement, interest, and exploration

In an effort to provide the best literacy instruction for all of my students, I need more series books, at their independent levels, to continue to develop a love for reading.

Due to budget constraints in our district and it being my first year teaching first grade, my classroom library is smaller than what my students need. Literacy research states that the average first grade classroom should have approximately 2000 books available at appropriate levels (150-200 books per student).

My Project

To become a life-long reader, children need that one story that makes him or her fall in love with reading. Research shows that children get hooked on series books and develop a love for reading because they get to really know the characters and are able to adventure with them through multiple books, fully immersing themselves. Series are great, especially for reluctant readers, because once they find one they enjoy, they will want to start on the next one as soon as they’ve finished the first - developing a love for reading!

In this project, I am requesting the most popular series books for my students as they reach the end of first grade to continue to build upon their love for reading throughout the summer and into second grade.

These series books pertain to their interests as well as their reading level.
