Serious About Science Fair

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Reeves's classroom raised $97

Science fair is a good showcase but many students see it as unrelated to anything they do in life. When will I ever need to use those skills in the real world? My proposal is to have students become familiar with Consumer Reports magazine and its monthly inquiry into scientific testing. With the lessons provided by the Consumer Reports website, students will study the real-life reports about real-life products, services, and issues they care about. I have found the magazine and lessons to be an ideal resource for helping students develop the thinking and decision-making skills they need, not only for a science fair project but in the long run as the consumer-citizens of tomorrow. Using the data in the magazine, students will discuss the differences between an hypothesis and a conclusion, determine how the variables affect overall performance ratings, read descriptions of actual experiments and discuss whether the data produced by the experiments adequately supports the given conclusion, and use this information to inspire and guide their own testing for a science fair project. I am the science specialist in an inner-city math and science academy, with a 98% low income population. I am requesting 15 subscriptions of Consumer Reports magazine for use in an after school science club composed of students serious about moving to the next level in science fair competition. Understanding how and why testing is done will result not only in the development of better questions and more accurate collection and analysis of data but improve their evaluation of information when they purchase items in the future. They will understand that "hype" and "glitz" is not always the best indicator of a good buy.
