Series of Books to Motivate Reluctant Readers

My students need several series of high interest books in a variety of genres that will motivate them to read more independently.

My Students

In my classroom I've hung a great Gary Paulsen quote which states,"Read like a wolf eats." Many of my students are voracious readers. However, there are still those students who struggle to find books that capture their interest or are the right level.

I teach 4th grade at a school of over 800 students.

My school community values reading and there are many students who have already been "bitten by the reading bug." Some of these students are in my class. There are also students who are reluctant readers that struggle with reading for a variety of reasons. Series books are a great way to capture the attention of these students. The more they read, the more they understand and this feeling of success leads to increased confidence which eventually permeates all of their learning.

My Project

By having a good selection of appropriately leveled high interest series books, my struggling students will find books which motivate them to read. Their comprehension will increase, for these series books will provide them with the opportunity to get to know the same characters, settings, vocabulary and structure. With these students reading more, it will build their reading stamina and have a positive impact on their critical thinking and writing skills. It will also result in an increased reading level which means more and more titles will become accessible for them. With this comes better peer and whole class discussions. All of this leads to increased confidence, and ultimately, greater success in all areas of the curriculum.

These books will build their stamina and comprehension level, so my students will be proud as they understand and complete more books. They will feel more successful, which will positively impact all of their learning. My current and future students will all benefit from the additional series in our class library as well.
