My Project
As a special education teacher for children with autism at a low-income/high-poverty school in Illinois, my students face many daily challenges. I have ten 1st/2nd graders who have been diagnosed with autism. All my students have difficulties with attention/focus and have high sensory/emotional needs. With these sensory lights, sensory mat and marble maze, I can help my students to foster their creativity while also meeting their sensory and fine motor needs.
These materials will enable me to provide my students with the opportunity to use their imaginations and create whatever comes to mind.
They will be using their hands which will help to strengthen their fine motor skills. Sensory regulation is one of the most complex skills that my students face. My students enjoy these hands on stem activities that will also help them learn to self-regulate when upset or overwhelmed.
