Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are fun, resilient, caring, and eager to learn. They are all unique and lovable in their own special ways. They live and grow up in a low income neighborhood and go to an inner city school. All my students are English Language Learners. Each year we struggle to maintain a budget to provide hands-on materials for my students.
I learned at a literacy training that multi-sensory techniques help make learning more accessible to all students, especially marginalized students.
Students also retain the letter names and letter sounds more when they use the different learning modalities--visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. The touch boards will encourage even my most reluctant writers to write. With the touch board, "children just press with their fingertips to draw pictures, form letters and practice the skills they need to really start writing!"
My Kindergarten students need to practice letter names, letter sounds, and letter formation. This will not only provide the multi-sensory experience for students, it will also help make writing fun.
My Project
When I introduce an alphabet, we say the letter name, letter sound, and practice how to write the letter. With the touch boards, students do not need pencils or markers. It is mess-free and easy to use. They can feel and see what they write by pressing the tips of their fingers onto the smooth vinyl screen. The board is easily cleared by pulling up vinyl screen. Students can easily take the touch boards to work at their tables, on the carpet, in small groups, or one-on-one to practice writing.
