Sensory, Vestibular, and Proprioceptive, Oh My!

Help me give my students the sensory, vestibular, and proprioceptive input they require to focus and be successful in class with wobble chairs, weighted vests, and a trampoline for a few ways to meet those needs!

My Project

Vestibular input is the sensation of movement, changes in direction, or changes in head position while proprioceptive input is sensory input that activates muscles and joints to improve coordination, muscle tone, and brain calming. Some kids may be unable to stop moving and may have a hard time with safety awareness, and many students with autism seek proprioceptive input in order to regulate their emotional and behavioral responses to sensory stimulation. These issues can severely impede daily life and regular activities in the home, school, or community.

My students are very young and have a difficult time expressing their needs, but their behaviors are all the communication we require.

Many of my students with special needs have dysregulated nervous systems. This makes it very difficult for them to focus and attend to classroom activities. Heavy work, deep pressure, and other sensory input activities can help us meet these needs in their bodies and minds so that they can feel calmer, safer, more at ease, and more emotionally regulated.

Many schools are beginning to recognize the importance of meeting these sensory needs before students are ready to learn; however, we do not have the funding to provide the necessary equipment to meet these needs. I am hoping, with your help, to create a sensory corner or heavy work station in my classroom so my students have immediate access to meeting their needs and can get back to learning as soon as possible!
