Sensory Tools to Support Student Learning

My students need different sensory integration tools to allow them to move, wiggle, bounce, touch and explore while they are learning and growing every day!

My Students

These first graders are energetic, hard-working, determined students who love coming to school everyday! The students live in a high poverty section of the city and the majority of them receive free breakfast and lunch at school. We have a large population of ESL learners and are increasing our inclusion classroom settings each year.

These students are eager to learn, to explore, and to be challenged!

Our school is a small, close-knit community where our students are taught to believe in themselves and that anything is possible!

My Project

My first graders are six and seven year old students who love to move their bodies and need multiple opportunities throughout the day to use their senses and incorporate movement into their learning. These sensory integration tools will allow them to stay focused during lessons on the rug, working at their desks, and cooling off in our designated "Thinking Area". The students can hold onto a fidget while listening to stories read aloud on the rug as well as holding onto the putty to keep their hands occupied while listening to the teachers. At their desks the students can use the stability ball chairs to keep themselves bouncing or moving. They can also choose to put their feet on the bouncy bands or sit on a wiggle seat for other types of movement. When students are upset they can use the resistance bands to stretch out, the weighted snake on their shoulders for pressure or the magic rainbow sling. These tools will make a difference in their daily lives at school and address many of their needs. I am so grateful for any contribution towards helping my students be more comfortable as learners!
