My Students
I teach a group of amazing, curious, and hardworking special education students across Kindergarten and first grade. My students have a range of disabilities, some of which include learning disabilities, physical disabilities, emotional disturbances, speech and language impairments, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Like any other class, my students' abilities and interests range across a wide spectrum.
All of my students require individual or small group attention; each day, I incorporate all of their learning styles, interests, and special education accommodations into our lessons.
Some of my students prefer visual or auditory cues for learning, while some require a more kinesthetic or tactile approach. My students come into our classroom each day with a love of school and a desire to grow as a learner.
My Project
This year, due to COVID-19, my students are missing out on the special classes that they typically love. They are always asking when they will return to those special classes, like art, physical education, and music. Each week at center time, all they want to do is create with their modeling clay. Watching their little minds hard at work making different things is one of my favorite parts of each week!
Incorporating clay projects in our classroom would be an incredible way to give my students access to those art projects, even though we aren't actually going to art class.
Having Model Magic and paintbrushes in our classroom would also give them access to creating art on a daily basis, not just once a week! In addition to the Model Magic, I am also requesting cookie cutters, that would allow my students to make shapes that they might otherwise be unable to make with just their hands. The trays and bins will help us to create clay projects in an organized fashion.
