This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students with autism are attending school for the first time in a newly opened Flexroom! This space is designed for students who struggle with self-regulation in the regular education setting.

When a student is feeling challenged and is experiencing considerable levels of emotional dysregulation this may result in problem behavior that interferes with successful participation in the general education setting.

One way to help children learn how to self-regulate is by providing them with sensory items for our calm-down corner. The Express Your Feelings Sensory Bottles provide children with quiet, self-directed, tangible ways to identify how they’re feeling, release the energy those feelings create, and calm down. The Sensory Fidget Tubes teach kids to soothe themselves with hands-on resources that help build social-emotional skills for children by providing cues and physical objects to deal with big emotions, without the strains that come with screens. PAWZ, the Calming Pup encourages children to be fully present and bring awareness to their thoughts and feelings, while also learning to manage stressful situations and provide anxiety relief for kids. Its auto-adjusting light guides children through deep breathing patterns. Once the student is calm and regulated they can return to their classroom and are ready for learning.
