My Students

Our school is full of little learners that are energetic, curious, and enthusiastic about learning. In our school, students are working hard to become readers, mathematicians, and writers.

Located in West Philadelphia, a historically under-served and impoverished area of the city, we strive to provide all students with the skills and knowledge needed to live an empowered, choice-filled life.

Every day we exemplify what it means to be a team and family; we "work hard and be nice." Our school values are love, bravery, curiosity, grit, and gratitude, and our Kippsters work hard to demonstrate those values every day!

This year, I have the honor of working in a new role as K-3 Special Education Teacher, working collaboratively with teachers and students to ensure that all of our students have the resources and skills they need to be successful both academically and social-emotionally. My caseload includes students diagnosed with Autism, Emotional Disturbance, and Other Health Impairment.

My Project

Many students have trouble processing the information their senses take in—things like sound, touch, taste, sight, and smell. There are also two other less well-known senses that can be affected—the first is a sense of body awareness, while the second involves movement, balance, and coordination. Sensory differences can make it hard for children to succeed at school for multiple reasons. For example, some children respond easily to sensory stimulation and find it overwhelming while some children are under-sensitive and seek stimulation.

Children who are sensitive to sensory stimulation may:

* Be unable to tolerate bright lights and loud noises like ambulance sirens

* Be distracted by background noises that others don’t seem to hear

* Often have trouble knowing where their body is in relation to other objects or people

* Bump into people and things and appear clumsy

* Have trouble sensing the amount of force they’re applying; for example, they may rip the paper when erasing, pinch too hard or slam down objects.

* Run off, or bolt, when they’re overwhelmed to get away from whatever is distressing them

* Have extreme meltdowns when overwhelmed

Children who are seeking sensory input may:

* Have a constant need to touch people or textures, even when it’s not socially acceptable

* Not understand personal space even when kids the same age are old enough to understand it

* Be very fidgety and unable to sit still

* Love jumping, bumping and crashing activities

* Enjoy deep pressure like tight bear hugs

Please help me give my students the sensory-related resources they need in order to be successful in the classroom and throughout their lives! The resources selected will give students the ability to move their bodies while in an appropriate way while they learn. Thank you in advance!
