My students need materials to help with high sensory stimulation. They become overstimulated by lights, noise and often need seating supports to help create a calming environment.
I teach in a self contained style preschool classroom. My students are aged 3-5 with disabilities that impact their ability to engage in a typically developing classroom. This being said, my classroom is adapted to meet their needs and how they learn.
Like their typical peers, my students love to engage in art, manipulatives, outdoor/ gross motor play, blocks and music.
My students love sensory exploration. My students learn through hands on learning and an environment that meets their needs.
I get to teach some of the greatest students but I cannot do it alone. Having support is critical!
My Project
My students have a variety of disabilities including Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, etc.. They vary in needs, language, social skills and academics. The majority of my students are effected by sensory stimuli. My ratio is 1-6 students. If I go over 12 students, I get a 3rd teacher assistant but this also means I can have 18 students in my room which in turn makes overstimulation drastically increase.
The loud fluorescent lights make it challenging for my students to concentrate.
Often, we need to turn the lights off which impacts their ability to engage in a different manner. Covering the lights with light covers will drastically improve how lighting effects my students learning. Noise is another way that my students are effected. Having a pair of noise cancelling headphones available with dramatically lower meltdowns. Changing seating is a great way to increase production in my class. Using bands on the chairs encourage my students to get their feet wiggles out in a safe manner without disrupting classmates.
Yogibo products are a classroom favorite. By adding the caterpillar roll to my library center, I will be increasing engagement in books and language, an area that my children struggle with.
