This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Self-regulation is the ability to calm yourself down when you are upset and cheer yourself up when you are down. In the classroom, students may need help with self-regulating their emotions and managing their behaviors. Teaching students how to handle stress, how to receive criticism, how to calm down when they are angry, or how to think positive thoughts about themselves are just some of the ways self-regulation skills are so important.
Providing students with various sensory experiences and strategies can help teach children self-regulation skills during the school day.
Sensory tools such as the calming strips in my project can stimulate the senses, providing sensory input necessary for the brain to process information. Without taking a child's attention away from a lesson, the student can trace the calming strip with the fingers to help relieve stress and continue to learn at the same time.
Tools such as the weighted puppy pillow and noise-canceling headphones can be used when a child is in a heightened state of anxiety. The weighted pillow mimics hands-on pressure to relax the nervous system which, in turn, may help alleviate pain and anxiety. And the headphones can reduce the intensity of the noises around a child who becomes overstimulated by sound. These tools are proven to reduce fear and worry and help the child learn to manage their own emotions and behaviors which is vital for them to be able to learn in a school setting.
