This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 15 amazing and UNIQUE pre-K students in a Special Day Class setting! Each of my students (ages 3-5) has a disability diagnosis and each totally varies in their level of independence, their needs, and their ability to communicate. Some of the children have skill levels equivalent to an 8-12 month old, and some possess age appropriate skills.
These amazing children overcome obstacles every single day that most of us take for granted.
Communication is difficult, social interactions are difficult, emotional regulation is difficult. These seemingly simple tasks are what we work on explicitly in the classroom to help give these students independence and the skills they need to thrive. My students require special and unique strategies to support their learning and sensory needs.
They are a spirited group who work hard every day to gain the skills that may not come naturally or easily to them. Their development and success in the classroom is extremely important to me, and I would like to do all I can to get them the resources they need and deserve!
My Project
The majority of my class is on the autism spectrum. My students require additional resources to help them regulate their bodies and emotions. These students may have an extra difficult time processing what is happening in the environment around them, as well as inside their own bodies. People with autism may have trouble processing sensory information, such as sounds, textures, lights, and motion. They can become overwhelmed and this can impair their daily functioning as well as their ability to learn and absorb information. Products specifically designed to support sensory regulation, such as fidget toys, flexible seating, and Theraputty, can help these little learners make sense of everything going on both internally and externally!
The environment can be difficult for them to navigate, and offering them sensory breaks/supports helps these children learn at their full potential.
Sensory integration, which may help children remain regulated and calm, allows them to better learn and respond to the world around them. To support our classroom, I am asking for fidget toys, inflatable seat cushions, body sox, Therputty, and squishy balls. These items would benefit my students greatly by helping them to process their world. I want to support my students in every way I can; a big part of this is offering these children resources to help them process information!
