This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a first year pre-school special education teacher. I teach children aged 3-5 with autism, and plan to stay within this field indefinitely. Unfortunately sensory toys and supplies are not always seen as essential to classrooms as they do not appear to directly relate to education, and are rarely district funded.

However, as early intervention autism research has shown, students on the spectrum thrive academically and holistically when they first have their sensory needs met.

My students are significantly better able to learn when they have a sufficient amount of sensory input for their developmental stage and individual needs.

For example, students enjoy the sensory experience of opening doors and cabinets and watching the handles and cabinets move. The busy boards, stepping stones, magnetic tiles, and other resources in this project will allow my students to suffice this sensory need without dangerous classroom elopement.

When children on the spectrum get dysregulated, it is often extremely difficult to interrupt their meltdowns and regulate their nervous systems. Things like sensory swings and rocker chairs have proven by research to regulate an autistic child's nervous system. With limited classroom supplies, I currently have to swing my kiddos around by holding them and spinning, as we do not have the funding yet for things like sensory swings. If our classrooms had these sensory essentials such as sensory swings and rockers, my students would be able to learn self-regulation and independently find what soothes them. This skill of self-regulation is one that will support them throughout their education.
