This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I'm a fifth grade teacher at a Title I elementary school in NYC with over 77% of our students qualifying for free or reduced-fee lunch.

Our school is in a specialized district for students with significant challenges, such as autism spectrum disorders, cognitive delays, emotional disturbances, sensory impairments, and multiple disabilities.

Many of my students have ADHD, a history of trauma, or other disabilities that affect their ability to sit still and focus on learning.

This is a wonderful group of students with tons of creativity and enormous potential. All they need is help from us to move them forward in their educational journey.

My Project

Due to fine motor issues, many of our students have difficulty using a pen or pencil. Our district has provided each of them with an iPad, but they need keyboards so they can fully express themselves in writing.

My students also have sensory processing and motor difficulties that make it hard for them to stay seated at a desk or table.

Weighted lap pads and active seating will make it possible for them to be calm and focus during lessons.

These items will be used by each student, in turn, so they can each discover the solution that works best for them.
