My Students

I have just been given the blessing of starting a brand new self-contained class for more severe students. The challenge we have is meeting their huge sensory needs along with the fact that this is an entirely new class without materials. In a middle school it is hard to find what we need!

I have precious students that are middle school aged.

Many would say that they should not be in a regular school environment, but my goal is to let others see the full potential that I see. I know without a shadow of a doubt that my kids are intelligent and capable of great things if we can help them harness their efforts. I see with each passing day they are gaining more control and are also communicating more effectively. We are blessed to be in a loving school environment with peer helpers and kind teachers. Sadly, since it is a middle school there is a lack of resources that can be shared. My students' needs vary greatly from their peers so we cannot borrow learning materials from other teachers in the building.

My Project

Some of the items I requested will be used for work tasks. My goal for these students is to find some meaningful task that they can engage in and potentially use as a means to "work" as they grow older. The requested items will help with sorting tasks (colors and shapes) and lacing (as well as being a means to teach the concepts of short and long). I am also very excited about the sandwich making game because that will be helpful in teaching a life skill, following directions, and job skills. I am also requesting sensory toys because they need items that are engaging with lights, sounds, and learning capabilities and are as they are. These toys will be used as options for reinforcement throughout the day and also during the one period they have devoted to meeting sensory needs.

This donation would make a huge difference in our room.

Right now I have kids that have more sensory and learning needs than most kids you will find anywhere, but I do not have the items I need to engage and reinforce them (without food!). We need this new room to start off right because there is nothing worse than starting a bad pattern with this type of student. I want us to stay moving towards the goal of showing the world what they have in them instead of allowing it to be trapped inside.
