Sensory Success for Special Learners

Help me give my students items for our sensory room at school! Interactive boards, gel floor tiles, and a sensory seat are all items that my students will love and benefit greatly from.

My Students

Students in Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten are eager, curious, and learn best in environments that allow them to explore questions and problems through play and hands-on activities. This age group of students is still working to develop basic social and emotional skills, as well as fine and gross motor skills.

I teach Pre-K and Kindergarten Special Education for students categorized as severe and profound.

My students will have varying abilities and challenges to overcome in a classroom setting. Special needs students need environments where they feel safe. They need to be able to practice social, emotional, and motor skills, and learn expectations for classroom behavior. My students will need lots of visual and hands on learning tools, as well as sensory items that help students to focus and/or calm down. Sensory input such as new textures, chewing, swinging, jumping, balancing, crawling, and fidgeting allows my students to function better in the school environment.

My Project

I teach students in Pre-K and Kindergarten who qualify for Special Education services. My students have varying needs and abilities. Most of my students benefit greatly from sensory breaks that allow them to clam down, expend energy, or practice fine and gross motor skills.

In my hallway, I have access to a sensory room with items that my students can use for their sensory needs.

The items I have requested in this grant will help provide a wider variety of sensory experiences in this sensory room. These items will greatly benefit the fine and gross motor development of my students, as well as aide in helping them to calm down and expend extra energy during sensory breaks. After these breaks, students return to the learning environment engaged and are much more likely to have successful academic experiences.

More specifically, the gel tiles will help my students with Autism who crave sensory input. They will be perfect for fine motor practice, as well as providing a calming way for my students to get sensory input. The interactive boards will be wonderful for my students who have poor motor control and need extra practice moving their feet, hands, and fingers. The boards are also good for students who are very active and need to release some energy. The Sensasoft Seat will help my students who like to feel pressure to calm down, as well as helping my students who have poor core strength to be able to sit on the floor and play with their peers.

I have selected these items because I know they will make a huge impact on the success of my students in the school environment.
