This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a special education teacher from a Title I school where the majority of our students come from low-income households. In my class, I have 20 students with various disabilities, ranging from autism to ADHD. Over the past year and a half, COVID-19 has impacted all the students and it definitely has a more significant impact on students with special needs due to the change of learning environment, lack of consistency in their daily routine, and lack of resources for both families and schools.

Why the sensory stools and toys?

For one thing, most of my students need movement and fidget toys to help them calm and focus. Especially for students with autism and ADHD, these sensory stools and toys are good outlets to release their anxiety and stress in the wake of COVID-19. Secondly, these sensory toys are also used as part of positive reinforcement in my class so that the students can be motivated to stay on-task and put their best effort. Thirdly, for students who lack resources at home, some of these sensory toys will be sent home. I believe the requested resources are vitally important for my students to continue their social-emotional and academic learning and to help them thrive in and out of school.
