Sensory Stickers for Super Students!

My Project

Studies have shown that 1 in 4 people in the United States will deal with mental illness at some point in their life--and plenty of those who don't deal with diagnosable mental disorders will still struggle with their mental health. I see that in my students every day. So many of my kids deal with anxiety, depression, perfectionism, disassociation, attention deficit, and more. My school is Title 1, so a large number of my kids also deal with the struggles of poverty and food insecurity on top of the normal struggles of being a teenager.

As a result, I feel that one of the most important things I can do as a teacher is help my students build self awareness and provide them with effective tools to regulate their thoughts and feelings--and these sensory stickers are one way I can do that.

I make it a regular part of my classroom to have my students practice mindfulness and meditation strategies. I want to be able to give my students stickers to put on their laptops or phones after those lessons. These stickers will help students who struggle with their mental health to remember the exercises we have learned and practice them on their own, without teacher support. This in turn will help them be more present and engaged in class. If they are able to meet their own mental health needs, they will be able to give more of their attention to learning.

Thank you in advance for your help with this project. A textured sticker may not seem like much, but it means a lot to the kids who really need it. Mindfulness and mental/emotional coping skills are so important, and these stickers will help my kids take those strategies with them into other classes and into the world.
