Help me give my students a sensory station in our inclusive classroom to meet the needs of all my students including those with special needs be able to address their sensory needs and create an inclusive environment.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
A sensory station/calm down corner is vital to making our inclusion classroom a classroom that benefits every student including my students with special needs. A sensory station has a plethora of benefits for all children including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, and other special needs. A sensory station allows students to meet their sensory needs as well as cope better when dealing with different sounds, lights, textures, and especially for stressful or difficult situations. Sensory materials such as fidget toys can reduce anxiety and assist with focusing, helping with calming ones thoughts by occupying your hands.
In addition to meeting sensory needs a calm down corner can be used to assist all students in expressing their feelings and coping with any overwhelming thoughts and emotions.
Using materials such as the express your feelings sensory bottles provides students with a quiet, self directed, tangible way to identify how they're feeling and release the energy those feelings may create. It is my passion to create a classroom where all my students feel safe and welcomed and be able to succeed by allowing all students to meet not only their educational needs but any special need they may have to be able to have as much success and happiness as possible.
