My Project
The music room is a laboratory for music making. This can be an exciting and creative space, but for many students, the sounds and motion is overstimulating! I want to provide lots of options to create a calm sensory environment for lots of students with a wide variety of sensory needs.
The music room has harsh fluorescent lights, and lots of sound ALL THE TIME.
I want to have soft lighting in the room instead. We have an oil diffuser and the students love to fill it and turn it on. We need new oils to make the room relaxing.
We use a lot of on-line music-making programs, and we need both a class set of headphones, and splitters so kids can work alone or in groups without the whole room filling with sound. We need a large storage box with dividers to keep them in.
Many of the units we do are loud. Recorders, guitars, ukuleles, xylophones, and drums. Kids have to work in groups. It gets so loud sometimes. We need a set of noise-reducing headphones for some kids so they can keep calm during work time.
Finally we need sensory fidgets and a printer. The fidgets help kids focus during instruction, and the printer will allow me to create adaptive assignments, enlarge music, or alternative work for students with special needs while in the classroom so I can be more flexible for everyone's needs.
