My Students

"Our body, mind, and emotions are so interconnected [that] , if we aren't getting enough physical support [it] can affect our ability to concentrate." Leslie Davenport My students are full of energy and need physical sensory support to minimize sensory overload and maximize learning opportunities.

My classroom is a separate setting, exceptional children's classroom with eight students.

Students range in grades from kindergarten to fifth grade. The students in my classroom all have learning disabilities, ranging from mild to moderate delays. These students come from various backgrounds but all are eager to learn! Some students are verbal, some are nonverbal. Our school has 409 students. We are a high poverty, Title I school in a rural area.

My Project

My students need sensory tools to be successful in their learning environment within our classroom. My students would benefit from two Hokki stools to sit around our guided reading table to increase their attention and reduce their sensory overload. The Hokki stools allows students to move without being disruptive and be able to focus on their reading skills for longer periods of time. The stools would enable students to be “moving while sitting still” and allow their sensory processing needs to be met while engaging in literacy instruction. My students also need the weighted blankets and lap pads to help clear their mind and release tension so they can think more clearly. Weighted blankets and pads allow students to momentarily recharge and handle the next task, calm nerves, anxiety, and the bombardment to their senses. The vibrating pillow and pea pod also helps students with sensory processing integration and helps students calm and regulate their system so they can learn.

If my students are able to receive these sensory supplies, they will have the opportunity to learn while processing their sensory environment.

Their literacy, fine motor, and math skills will improve. Having these supplies in the classroom will allow my students to be engaged and on task while “moving” and regulating their sensory overload all at the same time! Understanding the differences and creating a more sensory appropriate environment will help all students access the curriculum.
