Sensory Seekers

Help me give my students a sensory pathway for learning letters and numbers through movement, while getting their bodies ready for class.

My Students

My students attend a Title I school in the outskirts of a big city. Approximately 70% of my students receive a free or reduced-price lunch. 100% of my students are offered a free breakfast. My students are diverse, caring, and determined.

As a teacher, it is incredible to walk into a school where students are excited to learn and happy to be there.

Our school is a sensory integration school. We value finding what students need and giving it to them. This allows students to be focused, engaged, and enthusiastic about learning.

My Project

My students will be able to jump, balance, hop down the hallway, while learning letters, numbers, and movements. Have you ever seen students twirling around in line, jumping to avoid cracks, and/or touching the walls? These students are needing some vestibular input. With a pathway like this, my students will be able to do what their bodies are needing in an organized way. This pathway will also help our kinesthetic learners, the students who learn best through movement.

Many schools have learned that students are coming to school sensory processing issues.

This can cause an array of issues that interfere with the ability to focus and learn. We have to find what students need, and do that. Many students need jumping, spinning, touching, balancing, and movement. A sensory pathway, could be the students most effective way to refocus and get ready for the classroom. The sensory pathway will also allow students to also get their heart rate up; studies show that anytime the heart rate is increased, the brain has more oxygen and key nutrients to focus. The pathway will be placed in the hallway near our Innovation Hub, so any student at our school can use this.
