My Students

Every day my students are faced with a myriad of insurmountable tasks, including processing all that happens around them. My goal is to make our sensory room a place students can escape to when they are overwhelmed or when they need to regroup.

Our class is a cross-categorical special education class with students in grade levels k-5th.

We are a small school in rural South Carolina with a high percentage of free and reduced lunch. Students in our class have a wide range of disabilities and abilities. They are eager to learn and grow when provided with developmentally appropriate opportunities.

My Project

We need sensory calming items such as a hammock swing, doorway swing, cushy chair, sensory dome, wall mounted mountain activity center and sensory songs CD. By providing these supplies for our classroom sensory room, students will be able to take the sensory breaks that they need. When a student's sensory diet is fulfilled they are better able to learn and manage their behavior. Students will learn how movement helps their brains and ways to turn their brains on!

Having a way for students to fill their sensory needs means the difference in a student being able to learn something new, follow directions, or even sit through a read aloud.

These items will make a difference in the learning environment of our classroom for years to come.
