Sensory Seating Solutions for Students With Disabilities

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a Pediatric Occupational Therapist currently working in an NYC DOE Title 1 Public School in Brooklyn, NY. The majority of the students I work with come from low-income homes. These students have a variety of abilities as well as disabilities including but not limited to Autism Spectrum Disorder, learning disabilities, physical disabilities, difficulties with sensory processing, etc. My students have a lot of challenges to overcome in addition to their disabilities. However, they are so motivated to make progress that they inspire me each and every day. Though it may be challenging at times, I love my job and I love my students.
My Project
The different types of seat cushions that I am requesting for my students will help provide some sensory input for those students currently having difficulties regulating their sensory systems and focusing.
By helping these students regulate their sensory systems, they are better able to access information presented to them using a variety of methods by their teachers, para-professionals and/or therapists.
These seating options will allow students to move and wiggle while remaining in their seats and/or floor spots.
