My Students

I teach Special Education EREC Pre-K 4 students in Oklahoma. My program serves children from all cultures and low to poverty incomes and gives them the opportunity to learn and thrive within the classroom. I have a variety of disability categories within my classroom, including autism and intellectually disabled children. The biggest impact of COVID-19 on my students is they have been more isolated from their typical peers in the last two years. My students have had to be self-contained when their typical class or school is out for quarantine in which they miss valuable learning time with their typical peers.

Each student has a variety of needs that need to be met where they are in their developmental stage.

The biggest need is that of emotional security, so they can integrate with their typical peers within a general education classroom. With limited speech to express their needs and wants they tend to break down emotionally when they feel anxious, angry, and even excited. As I teach each child self-regulation techniques, they are able to integrate for longer periods of time with their typical peers, and eventually full inclusion.

My Project

The biggest impact of COVID-19 on my students is they have been more isolated from their typical peers. My students have had to be self-contained when their typical class or school is out for quarantine in which they miss valuable learning time with their typical peers. My classroom is a transition class from self-contained to general education. We practice whole group meetings, self-regulation techniques, and individual center time in a manner that reflects what our typical peers are doing in their classroom, but they need that time within their general education class to practice with their peers with the tools that meet their balance and movement sense to meet their body awareness.

My sensory-prone students have the hardest time at whole group meetings.

Sensory students have different needs such as some need an area to wiggle while others need a firm chair with sides where they can feel secure. Sitting at a carpet when you feel the need to wiggle and move and you are required to pay attention is difficult if your sensory needs are not being met. Therefore they need sensory tiles to help them come to whole group and be able to wiggle and attend to the lesson being taught. Also, chairs with firm sides provides security for a student to stay at the carpet. Both the sensory tiles and plastic chairs are easily moveable to the general education classroom for my students to use and attend to whole group learning.
