This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students in my classroom are working on math, science, social pragmatic, and functional living skills. Most have cognitive impairments or multiple disabilities which prevent them from learning successfully in typical classroom settings. These children come from low income backgrounds where meeting daily needs is a challenge and, from their family's perspective, education is sometimes an afterthought.
Even still, my students love to learn; especially through hands on activities.
They require additional supports to help them stay focused and regulated throughout the school day.
My Project
My students are learning academic skills such as science and math, as well as functional daily living skills including self regulation, cooking, hygiene, cleaning and plant care.
My students love to learn, but many of them become over or under stimulated throughout the school day, preventing them from staying focused on the curriculum.
They need tools to help them self regulate so that they will be ready to learn. The yoga ball, bean bag chairs, and kinetic sand will give my class the sensory input that they need in order to actively participate within the school environment.
The window gardens are a hands on way for my students to take care of plants, which teaches them responsibility. Watching the plants grow healthy and strong is a motivational way to teach patience, pride in their work, and compassion. It builds into our science curriculum and the nutritional component of our daily living skills.
Because my students are learning at different grade levels, the white boards allow the flexibility to differentiate and personalize my lessons to meet the individual needs of each child, especially during math.
