My Project

Stop! Regulate and listen! If only it was that easy for everyone! I’m a Special Education teacher in a small, rural district with a high poverty rate. After 15 years of teaching high school, I’m now working with an amazing group of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a self-contained classroom. I’m slowly building my sensory regulation toolbox to help accommodate a wide array of challenges and needs. It’s time to move beyond fidgets and weighted blankets and integrate additional ways to provide sensory input while learning, or in order to learn. For one individual a swivel chair will give them the movement they need, another student may prefer a wiggle cushion or bouncy band to move their body, while a third needs the gentle squeeze of a pod chair. Maybe it’s taking a break now by using the swing, watching the bubble lights or using a sensory bin, so that they can be active learners later. Maybe it’s just sitting and looking at pictures in a good book. Flexibility and support is the key. My goal is to give my students every opportunity to succeed—through academics and hands-on learning, but also with life and social skills practice, using coping strategies, and having access to sensory input to calm their bodies and minds.
