Sensory Sacks for Students With Autism

Help me give my students seat sacks filled with sensory regulation supports to help them focus.

My Students

Our class is comprised of eight amazing students with autism across three grade levels who learn in many different ways. Our students come from different wards from within DC, not just from the surrounding neighborhood. Our class is a self-contained classroom, which means that the majority of each student's learning takes place within our room. Many of our students also receive some instruction in the general education setting and are able to interact and socialize with their typically developing peers throughout the day.

Autism is a developmental disability that affects the way our students interact and communicate with others.

Autism is a spectrum disorder, and our students' skills and abilities fall all over the range of the spectrum. We have students who are approaching grade level academically as well as students who are not yet communicating verbally. Each of our students is unique and has their own strengths, gifts, and support needs. All of our students need support in the areas of communication, behavior, social interaction, and daily living skills.

My Project

Many of our students seek out sensory input in the form of visual, tactile, and auditory input. We are requesting seat sacks for each of our student's chairs so that they can have necessary sensory tools within arm's reach so they don't need to walk around the room searching for supplies.

Quick access to sensory tools will impact my students' learning for the better because it will help them focus and maintain attention to the information being taught.

We are asking for sensory equipment such as noise cancelling headphones, stress balls, and fidgets in order to provide differentiated resources for each student's needs. When these sensory supplies are right by their desk, this will also decrease the time it takes for them to access these materials and get our students back on track quickly. We hope you will support our class get individualized sensory sacks for our desks!
