All school aged children have different social and emotional needs. Students today have a difficult time self regulating their emotions for various reasons. As educators we need to be able to help guide students on ways to deal with emotions in a healthy way.
By having a sensory room, students of any age and ability will be able to find ways by using their senses to self-regulate their emotions and find an inner peace that will allow them to return to their classroom and be a more engaged learner.
I want to create a sensory room filled with items that students can touch/ manipulate, look at, and listen to, to calm their behaviors down and then be able to discuss in a calm environment why they were acting the way they were and discuss more positive ways to express themselves. I am asking for sensory mats, a Sensory Tent Calm Down Corner, a Sensory Bubble Wall Fountain, an Optic Curtain Light Kit with RGBW Waterfall sounds, as well as some sensory lights. This sensory room is for all students, but as a resource teacher, my students struggle sometimes with regulating their behaviors and by having this sensory room they will be able to go into a space that is calming and relaxing which will decrease their behaviors.
