My Students

The school houses Pre-K through 6th grade. The school is a Title I school and has about 645 students. These students are fun loving and a joy to teach every day. They love to learn and be in an environment where they feel safe.

We would love to provide the resources needed to help them become successful in the classroom and outside the classroom.

There is a range of classroom teachers in each grade that help support students with many needs every day.

My Project

We teach some amazing students, and this sensory room would be beneficial for all grade levels from PreK to 6th grade. It will be used by general ed. and special ed. students. These students come from many diverse backgrounds, races, and home lives. Many of these students have extremely hard home lives and school is the one place they feel safe. We want to be able to give them an area to be able to have space and tools to help them learn how to cope and regulate their feelings and emotions.

The uncertainty of this pandemic and isolation is very hard for children.

Many of the students also have sensory processing needs. We need a safe place for students to go when they need a sensory break. This need has become even greater as students have returned to school after COVID-19, with more stress than they had before.

The material will be used to help calm their emotions when they are escalated and give them different options based on their needs. This sensory space will give the students a space to have a break and then be able to reenter their classroom successfully.

Each child has different needs and we all have different things that help up to be able to cope with stress and feelings. That's why we want to provide different items to meet each of the students needs. Such as the bean bags and calming lights will help those students that need just a calm area to regulate their feelings. The magnetic blocks and puzzles will help those students that need movement to help calm their feelings. Our school and students are in dire need of a space for these children to have a space where they can express their feelings away from other peers.
