This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a vibrant bunch of boys and girls who just want to be able to learn just like everyone else. Their intellectual disabilities often prevent that from happening. They all have different backgrounds. My students are a mixture of nationalities, languages, and disabilities. This is part of what makes them special. What they have in common is trauma, poverty, and a desire to learn despite their disabilities. Most of these are not qualities they are proud of, but they deal with what they are given. The results are mixed, but their drive never stops.

My Project

My school has a 30% special education population. Within that, we have 8 self contained classrooms for students with significant intellectual disabilities. These disabilities often come with sensory processing issues.

Students can become overwhelmed easily and need a way to focus their bodies and their energy.

Many students in the regular education classes have these needs as well, but they come out as behavior difficulties instead of sensory problems. I am starting a sensory room that can be used not only by special education students, but regular education students as well. It is my hope that all students in the school will have access to the room (with adult supervision) to get the focus they need to finish their school days to the best of their ability, and with minimal behavioral outbursts.

The items that were requested calm and help focus energy. There is a wide variety of "toys" and comfort items for the wide variety of students served in the school. Some students just need something to watch that calms them, like fiber optic lights, some need fidget toys, some need to concentrate on searching for items in sensory bins. This room has been carefully planned with the help of the school psychologist and physical and occupational therapists.
