This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Help me create a Sensory Room for my special education middle school students! Students often come to school with various social and emotional concerns and need a quiet place within our program to de-escalate, problem solve, and work through their frustrations. My students are dealing with grief, loss, poverty, domestic violence, and various behavior disorders including ADHD, Autism and Emotional Disturbance.

A sensory room will give them the area they need to release some of those frustrations and stress they carry around and get back into class and learning!

A punching bag, weighted balls, and fitness rope can facilitate in helping them release their frustrations safely. It gives them an appropriate outlet for their sensory needs. Yoga mats will be utilized in guided meditations and gentle stretching to help my students decompress and release some stress in a productive and healthy way.
