This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I have to admit that even after 25 years of teaching, I’m still learning from them every day. I am a special education teacher in a class of 15 3rd-6th grade students. I teach in a trauma informed classroom where we not only teach, but also support self-regulation and building relationships.

A trauma-sensitive classroom is where the teacher understands trauma’s impact on brain development and how that manifests itself in the child’s behavior.

A trauma-sensitive approach means you recognize where the children are at emotionally through how they behave and then you meet their social and emotional needs. It is important that all students feel safe, welcomed, and supported. We provide an environment where children from “hard places” can be successful, involved learners. I want them to know I care and that I will always find a safe space where they can retreat and calm down.

My students are inquisitive, thoughtful, and attentive and they need adults in their lives that help them heal and grow. After all, if a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.

My Project

I chose these specific materials based on the needs of my students. Having items such as Swirling Glitter Sensory Balls, a Sensory Disc Set, and even Yoga Mats will give them more options of relief when in our "sensory room".

I will use these new materials to set up additional stations to support the ability to calm down, focus, learn -- and self-regulate.

As a teacher, I observe that when children move during a sensory break, there are fewer behavior problems in class.

Students have scheduled breaks in the sensory room each day to help reduce stress and learn coping skills.
