Sensory Regulation to the Rescue!

My Project

Working with students in kindergarten through 3rd grade on Individual Education Plans is truly a blessing. Most of the students are on the Autism spectrum disorder and or have emotional issues and cognitive disabilities. I work with these students in the regular classroom as well in the resource center. It's in the resource center where most of these students can truly relax and open up. They try so hard to keep up with their peers in the classroom and keep their behaviors in check. It can be exhausting for these student. That's when you get the overload and the frustrating behaviors come out. Having the students in small group away from the busy classroom is like hitting the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. We get to talk and exchange all sorts of up and close personal conversations that assist these children to understand their emotions and to learn appropriate behaviors and also strengthen their skills in all subject areas. Using putty that they can work hands-on with keeps them busy and helps them open up with conversation. Anything children can suck on like Jolly Ranchers or Dum Dums usually calms them down but is not always appropriate in other situations in a regular classroom of 28 students. Getting to know these students every year up and close makes my day every day.
