Sensory Regulation in Kindergarten

Help me give my students access to important foundation tools for learning self-regulation!

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Chelsea's classroom raised $728

My Students

Kindergarten is the first formal educational setting for many of the students entering my school. It is a year that can frame the way students see themselves, which is why it is an important time to allow students to develop confidence and a high sense of self. Despite the trauma they may encounter outside of school, they show up each and every day ready to learn. Often in communities like ours, students come to school already trailing their peers academically.

In order to bridge the gap between early childhood and the high demands put on elementary aged students, self-regulation skills must be explicitly taught and intentional supports should be provided.

Self-regulation is a skill that continues to develop through a lifetime of practice. Students who are able to focus and stay present in a classroom setting are more likely to be academically on grade level, which is why these skills are the foundation of a good education.

My Project

Sensory regulation is an important life skill that should be taught starting at a very young age. For many children, especially those new to a traditional school setting, being expected to sit and focus for an extended period of time is a challenge. One of the biggest foundational skills for elementary aged children is to build academic stamina.

A child who has the skills to identify their feelings and use tools to regulate their bodies into a comfortable space for learning will be more likely to excel academically.

These tools will serve three main spaces for our classroom: the calm down space, the carpet where we convene for lessons, and a listening center for regulation and literacy. The lap weights and camp chairs will serve as supports for carpet learning time. Many of the items such as TheraPutty, noise cancelling headphones, fidget tools, and sand timers will be used in the calm down corner for independent regulation needs. All of these are important tools for learning the foundations of self-regulation!
