Sensory Regulation for First Year Classroom

Help me give my students resources and tools to regulate and communicate their emotions!

My Project

I am a first-year teacher, starting in August in a K-2 Autistic Support classroom! My list focuses on resources for my students to utilize when they need some extra help with regulating their emotions.

Every item on this list will support and benefit my students in a different, but necessary way.

Flexible seating helps students by giving them choices in how and where they learn best, which can lead to increased comfort, focus, and engagement, especially for students with autism who may have different sensory and movement needs. Traditional seating can be restrictive, while options like floor cushions allow for gentle movement and body positioning that support self-regulation. This movement can help students release excess energy and maintain attention during learning activities.

Social-emotional books and tools like the Feeling Spot play a key role in helping young students with autism recognize, understand, and manage their emotions. These books often use simple language, relatable characters, and visual supports to teach concepts such as identifying feelings, understanding others' perspectives, and learning coping strategies. For many students with autism who benefit from concrete and visual learning, these stories provide clear examples of emotional experiences and appropriate ways to respond, making abstract ideas more accessible.

Toys, games, and flexible seating can be powerful tools for helping students with autism regulate their emotions and sensory input. Sensory toys—such as squishy balls or textured items—offer tactile stimulation that can help calm the nervous system. These toys provide a safe outlet for excess energy or stress and can be used during transitions, breaks, or moments of dysregulation to help students return to a more focused, calm state

Your donation will help me build my first classroom and create a supporting environment. Thank you!
