This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Help me give my students the gift of sensory regulation! While all 55+ students struggle with their communication skills, most of them also struggle with sensory regulation. Some of my students also have Autism, are Deaf, and/or visually impaired. Because of these multiple disabilities, my students require a lot of sensory input to help regulate their bodies to ensure they are in the optimal condition for learning! Students who become dysregulated will become distressed and therefore lead to challenging behaviors. These behaviors negatively impact their ability to participate in learning, make progress on their goals, and impact their ability to make connections with their peers and teachers. It also leads to feelings of frustration from not only the student, but the teachers, administrators, parents, and caregivers.

Without proper sensory regulation, like compression vests and sensory chairs, our students are not able to self advocate for what they need to help them feel safe and ready to learn and communicate at school.

With these tools, I will be able to further assist my students, coworkers, and parents/caregivers with the knowledge and power of sensory regulation. This will lead to more opportunities for learning and growing!
